If the high temperature body comes in contact with low temperature body then it will transfer heat to it. The transfer of heat continues until both attain the same temperature. At this point the two bodies are said to attain thermal equilibrium.

The thermal equilibrium cannot depend on the nature of system concerned. All systems in thermal equilibrium have the same temperature irrespective of the nature.

Zeroth law of thermodynamics states that :
If two bodies are in thermal equilibrium with the third body that tells that the two bodies are in thermal equilibrium with each other.

Example : If a body A is in thermal equilibrium with body C also body B is in thermal equilibrium with body C then A and B are in thermal equilibrium with each other.

Lets go through same zeroth law of thermodynamics examples:
  • Take two glass of water. One proper boiled and other kept in the freezer such that first glass attain temperature greater than room temperature and other lesser than it. Keep it on table exposing to room temperature for some time such that both should not be in contact with each other. After some time the two glasses attain equilibrium with surroundings. At the same time they will be in thermal equilibrium with each other.
  • Take an electric rod and put in water then the water becomes hot. It is because the heat is exchanged between the two to attain the thermal equilibrium with each other.
  • Sweating that happens in human body is good example. It gives a cooling effect.
